3 Wikis = Collaboration Wonderful tool to engage interpersonal intelligent learners within same or different districts (Teachers new to Wiki)

4 History  WikiWikiWeb was the first wiki site.  In 1994, Ward Cunningham developed the first wiki software.  WikiWikiWeb, originally described as "the simplest online database that could possibly work.“  "Wiki" is a Hawaiian word for "fast“ and can be expanded as "What I Know Is“.  A shuttle ran between airport’s terminals called “Wiki Wiki” at Honolulu International Airport. Therefore, the Wiki was named instead of “quick” by Mr. Cunningham. (adopted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki

5 Background  A wiki is a collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone with access to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language.  Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites. For example, Wikipedia is one of the best-known wikis.  In early 2000s, Wikis were used in business to provide intranet, project communication, and documentation.  Today, not only do companies use wikis, but also schools and universities use wikis to enhance group learning. 12 How teachers introduce wikis to students?  Introduce the rules for writing on wikis.  Developing a system for recording the efforts and accomplishments of individuals.  Talk with students about the conventions they will establish for co-authoring.  Create own style guide and culture.  Ask students to play particular roles “Guard” (Teachers new to Wiki)

13 Pros and Cons  No need to know HTML.  Anyone can write on wikis.  Writing process can be seen.  Password protected, intra- or inter- organization(s) communication.  No authorship/ownership will be claimed on wikis.  Not a presentation space nor a course management.  Not a good idea for visuals and design options.  Not good for those who are uncomfortable with public writing.
