1 Year 6 Autumn 1 2015 “Goodnight Mr Tom“ Skills Literacy Reading Understand what they read by checking book makes sense to them, discussing their understanding and exploring the meaning of words in context, asking questions to improve their understanding. Drawing inferences such as characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions, justifying inferences with evidence. Summarising the main ideas drawn from more than one paragraph, identifying key details that support the main ideas. Writing Plan their writing by identifying the audience for and purpose of the writing, selecting the appropriate form and using other similar writing as models for their own. Noting and developing initial ideas, drawing on reading where necessary. Consider how authors have developed have read. Draft and write in narratives, describing settings, characters and atmosphere and integrating dialogue to convey character and advance the action. Using a wide range of devices to build cohesion within and across paragraphs. Assessing the effectiveness of their own and others’ writing. Proof read for spelling and punctuation errors. Choose which shape of a letter to use and deciding whether or not to join specific letters. Spelling use further prefixes and suffixes. Use knowledge of morphology and etymology in spelling. Use dictionaries to check the spelling and meaning of words. Use a thesaurus. Grammar and punctuation Using the perfect form of verbs to mark relationships of time and cause. Expanded noun phrases to convey complicated information concisely. Using modal verbs or adverbs to indicate degrees of possibility. Using commas to clarify meaning. Using semi colons to mark boundaries between independent clauses. Science Electricity Associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit. Compare and give reasons for variations in how components function, including the brightness of bulbs, loudness of buzzers and the on/off position of switches. Use recognised symbols when representing a simple circuit in a diagram. Working scientifically Plan different types of scientific enquiries to answer questions, including recognising and controlling variables where necessary. Report and present findings from enquiries. A significant turning point in British history, for example, the first railways or the Battle of Britain know and understand the history of these islands as a coherent, chronological narrative, from the earliest times to the present day: how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world RE Practices and ways of life Values and commitment Understanding the best way for a Muslim to show commitment to God. Maths Round any whole number to a required degree of accuracy. Use negative numbers in context, and calculate intervals across zero. Solve number and practical problems involving number and place value. Measurement and Geometry Solve problems involving calculation and conversion of units of measure, using decimal notation up to 3 d.p. Use, read, write and convert between standard units, converting measurements of length, mass, volume and time. Draw 2-d shapes using given dimensions and angles. Recognise, describe and build simple 3-d shapes, incl. making nets. Compare and classify geometric shapes based on properties and sizes and find unknown angles in triangles, quadrilaterals and regular polygons. Recognise angles where they meet at a point, are on a straight line, or are vertically opposite, and find missing angles. Problem Solving- solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication and division solve number and practical problems that involve all of the above. solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why solve problems involving the relative sizes of two quantities where missing values can be found by using integer multiplication and division facts  solve problems involving the calculation of percentages [for example, of measures, and such as 15% of 360] and the use of percentages for comparison  solve problems involving similar shapes where the scale factor is known or can be found  solve problems involving unequal sharing and grouping using knowledge of fractions and multiples. History Geography Not covered this half term PE Gymnastics Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance. Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement. Games play competitive games, modified where appropriate, such as badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis, and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending  develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance, Computing Modelling Control and programming Develop algorithms and programs controlling, sensing and simulating the real world: Use logical reasoning to explain how a simple algorithm works and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs. Use sequence, selection and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output; generate appropriate inputs and outputs to test programs. Art/DT To create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas. To improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials [for example, pencil, charcoal, paint, clay] About great artists, architects and designers in history. French listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help* Music To learn to play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes. Use and understand staff and other musical notations.

2 Year 6 Autumn 1 2015 “Goodnight Mr Tom” Suggested Activities Literacy Goodnight Mr Tom Narrative and composition Letter writing Recount - Newspaper reports Diary writing Numeracy Problem solving- Real life investigations Creating own problem solving Sharing good practice Real ownership of learning through Maths Draw shapes and nets accurately, using measuring tools and labels or lines and angles. Derive lengths of sides and angle size from known measurements. Science Construct simple series circuits to investigate what happens when different components are tried. Systematically identifying the effect of changing one component at a time. Design and make a warning system to alarm people of danger. RE Learning to understand some of the ways Muslims show commitment to God and to evaluate whether there is a best way. Do religious people lead better lives? Do all religious beliefs influence people to behave well towards others? Discuss commitment and its meaning. Key ingredients. 5 pillars of Islam. Muslim prayer. Zakah – giving to charity Sawm – fasting Hajj – pilgrimage Continuum to show importance of each practice, which shows most commitment? why? In which ways to they show commitment? Which is best way? Reflect back to key ingredients. Mission statement to reinforce their chosen commitment. Geography Not covered this half term PE Gymnastics link ideas, skills and techniques with control, precision and fluency when performing basic skills. Understand composition by selecting and performing more complex sequences, alone and in groups. Describe how to refine, improve and modify. Games Ball/ team games- hand/ eye etc… co-ord. Strategy games- team work/ planning/ one step ahead Competitive games- how to win/ how to lose Art/DT Shades, tones and lines using charcoal, chalk and graphite Hatching and shading Blending Line drawing Lowry French Songs/ rhymes Greetings/ one to one chat Music Planned keyboard and singing lessons with Music teacher. The children will be taught to: Learn a variety of songs, which they will learn to sing and play using the keyboards. Understand and explain the key features of music, for example; Pitch, rhythm and tempo. History History overview- Why, when….
