How It All Started The journey of coal.

First Campus This was part of the First Campus initiative at the University of Glamorgan to encourage younger people to aim for university after school. The Aim of the programme was to give us an insight into the importance of coal to Wales both now and in the past.

The Five W’s The five W’s represent where, who, when, what and why. We were given a five W’s sheet and fifteen pictures. We had to study each picture and then write down what questions we wanted to ask about the picture using our thinking skills. 5 w's coal mines.doc

Questions About The Journey Of Coal Who? Who were in charge of the mines? Who wrote out their pay slips? Who worked down the mines?

Questions About The Journey Of Coal Where? Where were the mines in Wales? Where did they keep the horses? Where were the coal trams kept?

Questions About The Journey Of Coal Why? Why were the insects in the forest so big? Why were the trees so big in the forest? Why did the children work down the mine? Why did the mines close? Why did the children not go to school?

Questions About The Journey Of Coal What? What were the names of the creatures in the forest? What was the number of children that worked in the mine? What jobs did the young boys do? What jobs did the men do? What was used to get the coal to the pit surface?

Questions About The Journey Of Coal When? When did they find coal? When did the pit start to close? When was the earth a forest? When did the miners strike? When did the children start working in the coal mine?

Our Trip To Cardiff Museum 2008

The Classroom The lady showed us a PowerPoint presentation about the coal forest. We learnt:- The coal forests were millions of years ago. The coal forests were before the dinosaurs. The coal forests were very similar to a rain forest.

The Creatures Giant spiders Giant dragon flies

Fossils We used a magnifying glass to match fossils to a picture. We found leaf and animal prints in the fossils.

The Experiment Squashing mud, water and clay. This is what happened in the coal forest. We had great fun getting dirty and covered in mud.

The Experiment Collapsing of the rain forest. We used match stick as trees. It was a very interesting experiment.

The Museum From the visit we learnt: all about the trees and their names. about the names of the creatures and how big they were. It was very interesting to know. The most amazing fact was that the trees were over 50 metres high. Which is taller then 8 double decker buses!

The end of the day We had a great day but it was time to leave. We learnt how coal was formed. The lady was very helpful! A good start to our project.
