What is a Stereotype? A common generalization of a particular type of person that is not always true

Common Stereotypes Italians are mobsters and love to eat pasta Indians are all doctors and telemarketers with bad accents African Americans are always connected to crime and drugs Caucasians are snotty, redneck, can’t dance, can’t play sports, privileged Jewish people are cheap

Common Stereotypes Germans are Nazis Irish are alcoholics and eat potatoes African Americans are good athletes and dancers Asians are good at math, eat rice, and drive slow People who live in England have bad teeth Arabs and Muslims are terrorists

Common Stereotypes Mexicans are lazy and came into America illegally Americans are obese, lazy, and dim-witted Homer Simpson of the TV series The Simpsons is the personification of this stereotype. Women aren't as smart as men Women are neat and like to clean Men take charge in a relationship

Common Stereotypes Women can’t do as good of a job as a man Girls are not good at sports Guys are messy and unclean Men who spend too much time on the computer or read are geeks Men are strong and do all the work

Common Stereotypes Goths wear black clothes, black makeup, are depressed and hated by society Punks wear mohawks, spikes, chains, are a menace to society and are always getting in trouble Politicians think only of personal gain and benefit Girls are only concerned about physical appearance

Common Stereotypes Blondes are unintelligent Teenagers are rebels Children don't enjoy healthy food Only anorexic women can become models Librarians are women who are old, wear glasses, tie a high bun, and have a perpetual frown on their face

Create your own Stereotype Remix! Research & Brainstorm common stereotypes Find a close-up image online that portrays this stereotype Manipulate the image in Photoshop ( B&W, Stamp filter) Add your text (a simple slogan) that defies this stereotype Print the image and text separately

Create your own Stereotype Remix! Trace the text and dark areas of the image on acetate Cut an acetate stencil for your text and image Using a ruler, draw your frame and text block on the canvas Stamp your stencil on your canvas using black acrylic paint Paint your text box and frame using red acrylic paint
