Fleas, which lived on the rodents, carried the bacillus to humans by carrying blood from rodents to the people. Unfortunately, for those who were infected, the bug quickly brought a death sentence, as over the course of three or four days the victims experienced horrible pain. These swellings produced blackish coloured spots on the body. Death resulted soon after as these swellings expanded until they burst.
