6 What is the ATOMIC NUMBER? o This number places the elements in order from left to right across the periodic table. o You will learn more about it in 8 th grade.

7 What is the SYMBOL? o An abbreviation of the element name.

8 Chemical Symbols Chemical symbols are often, but not always the first letters in the element’s name. If they have two letters in the symbol, the first is ALWAYS a capital letter, the second is ALWAYS lower case. One letter symbols are ALWAYS a capital letter.
