Angular Momentum The Silent Killer

Introduction Angular momentum is sometimes described as the rotational analog of linear momentum.linear momentum Angular momentum is a quantity that is useful in describing the rotational state of a physical system Angular momentum is a quantity that is useful in describing the rotational state of a physical system. For a rigid body rotating around an axis of symmetry (e.g. the fins of a ceiling fan), the angular momentum can be expressed as the product of the body's moment of inertia and its angular velocity.

Definition and Equations Angular Momentum is also known as the moment of momentum. The angular momentum of a particle at a given origin is represented as L=R x P. L = the angular momentum of the particle. R = the postion vector of the particle relative to the origin. P = the linear momentum of the particle.

More Definitions and Equations. For an object with a fixed mass that is rotating about a fixed symmetry axis, the angular momentum is expressed as the product of the moment of inertia of the object and its angular velocity vector. moment of inertia L = Iw Where L is the angular momentum(N x M x S) of the object, I is the moment of inertia(kg m 2 ) and W is the angular velocity.

Angular Momentum in Everyday Life Possibly the most familiar example of angular momentum is the spinning of a top. A top remains straight while spinning due to its angular momentum. Another example is an ice skater who spins faster when their arms are kept tight to their body, rather than be extended. The increased speed is a consequence of conserving angular momentum.
