13 13 BTU Cottbus is an internationally recognised, innovation-driven institute of technology with a sharply defined academic profile. We concentrate on five focal areas: Environment, Energy, Materials, Building, as well as Information and Communication Technology. Our mission is not only to impart knowledge and skills in engineering and natural sciences in a forward-looking and sustainable manner, but also to explore and to convey interdisciplinary competencies to our students. Teaching and research at BTU meets the highest international standards in a ‘real-life laboratory’ environment, BTU combines a decidedly international orientation with a strong regional accent. By guaranteeing excellence in our specialist areas of expertise, we are striving to become European leaders in Executive Post Graduate Programmes (Lifelong Learning). BTU offers an excellent learning environment and a favourable teacher-student ratio, which together ensure outstanding career opportunities for our graduates. 14 14 Scientific research at BTU is strategically concentrating on five focal areas: Environment, Energy, Materials, Building, as well as Information and Communication Technology. These five areas of academic focus constitute, however, only one component of BTU’s overall research activities, in which more than one hundred university Chairs are actively involved. 02 · THE PHILOSOPHY OF BTU RESEARCH PROFILE Nature’s secrets revealed: BTU has the lead in the German Research Foundation (DFG) collaborative special research programme Transregio 38, which explores the origins of ecosystems. BTU has its own six-hectare openair laboratory on a section of the former open cast mine Welzow-Süd. FOCAL AREAS ENVIRONMENTBUILDINGENERGYMATERIALSINFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

15 15 BTU is characterised by its active promotion of transdisciplinary research and teaching: a successful approach across disciplines can be more easily implemented at a small university such as BTU, than at mega-universities with their complex hierarchies. BTU research strives to identify local solutions to global problems. The challenge of meeting the energy needs of a growing world population, while at the same time conserving the environment and the natural resources, are examples of the complex problems scientists must face today.We need young people to get involved and to actively contribute to this important task, lateral thinkers willing to dedicate themselves to science and to making a positive impact, young scientists who are ready and able to contribute to international and interdisciplinary teams. 02 · THE PHILOSOPHY OF BTU BTU RESEARCH – WORKING TOGETHER FOR A BETTER WORLD Samples obtained onsite are examined and evaluated in the laboratory

16 16 BTU Cottbus benefits greatly from its unique geographical location: while other universities resort to laboratory simulations, BTU students and teachers have access to a dedicated ‘real-life laboratory’ right in their own back yard. The City of Cottbus and surrounding Lausitz Region are particularly suited for hands-on research of all kinds. This is a significant advantage for students in any of five focal areas of research, and especially in our core subjects Environment, Energy, and Building. 02 · THE PHILOSOPHY OF BTU BTU TEACHING – LEARNING IN A REAL- LIFE LABORATORY BTU students have the opportunity to gain invaluable practical experience by cooperating with partners such as Rolls Royce during their studies

17 17 Students at BTU Cottbus benefit greatly from our university’s unique didactic approach (“didactic fingerprint”), which consists of practice-oriented teaching environments and project-based learning. BTU has achieved special status on the basis of its selection as a ‘Rolls Royce University Technology Centre’ (UTC) in 2005: BTU was the first German university to receive this prestigious honour, and is one of only 24 such University Technology Centres worldwide – a recognition of excellence that also gives us direct access to Rolls Royce’s invaluable international networks. 02 · THE PHILOSOPHY OF BTU PRACTICE – ORIENTED STUDY PROGRAMMES In 2008, BTU students initiated the project “Let’s plant a garden”: together with the citizens of Cottbus our students actively develop and plant gardens on derelict land around the city

19 19 BTU is one of the most popular universities in Germany, according to a study conducted by the student network studiVZ. The reasons for this popularity are clear: outstanding scientific facilities, first-rate teaching in small classes, and individual student counselling in an informal but international atmosphere. BTU’s dedication to quality helps students obtain their degrees within the allotted time – and all this without tuition fees!  Centre for Higher Education Development 2008 in the ZEIT Student Guide: Industrial Engineering programme earned on the first place;  BTU courses in Business Administration, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, and Culture and Technology are also very popular among students. 03 · LIVING AND STUDYING AT BTU BTU – OUR STUDENTS LOVE IT HERE

22 2203 · LIVING AND STUDYING AT BTU LIVING IN COTTBUS BTU students have a broad choice of accommodation options:  Student Services rents dormitory apartments with Internet access for 160 to 313 € per month, depending on size and provided facilities.  The city´s housing association rents apartments in all price categories and close to the university, which gives BTU students access to the local housing market.  These accommodations range from inexpensive studios and small apartments in old buildings, to modern maisonettes. Numerous well-preserved 19thcentury residential buildings still adorn the city’s west end

23 2303 · LIVING AND STUDYING AT BTU LIVING IN COTTBUS The historical centre of Cottbus is marked by the Altmarkt (Old Market) and the medieval St. Nikolai Church (Oberkirche) The successful Coffee Latte coffee shop was established in 2004 by Doreen Zeumke, a BTU graduate; the shop now employs 16 persons

24 2403 · LIVING AND STUDYING AT BTU The City of Cottbus offers the full range of leisure activities and cultural amenities.  ART IN A POWER PLANT The former power plant Dieselkraftwerk erected in 1928 houses Cottbus’ Museum of Contemporary Art since 2008. The museum’s extensive art collections can be viewed in the context of continuous exhibitions.  THE VERY BEST IN THEATRE Cottbus State Theatre offers a broad spectrum of sophisticated cultural programmes, from progressive theatrical performances to concerts and opera.  AN INTERNATIONAL HIGHLIGHT: THE EASTERN EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL Each year in November, Cottbus is transformed into a cinema capital, when famous filmmakers from Eastern Europe and their teams come to the city:  The STUDENT CULTURE AND BAR SCENE of the Cottbus Altstadt (Old Town) offers special flair close to the campus.  BTU is famous for offering a diversity of UNIVERSITY SPORTS, which help provide the correct balance to study for many students.
