3. 7. Explain humanism and explain its role on the Renaissance. Humanism was an intellectual movement taking place in the Renaissance. The basis for this movement was the study of classical literary works and Greek and Roman values. The subjects of grammar, poetry, philosophy, rhetoric and history were also studied…these today are known as the humanities.

Humanism played a key role in the Renaissance because it inspired the following: Schools and education in the humanities New literary works New artwork (architecture, painting, sculpting) Increased civic participation Greater appreciation for life and the world around them

6. Invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15 th century (around 1450) Made production of books faster and cheaper Gave access to books to the masses, not just the wealthy Helped spread humanist ideas quickly through Europe

8. 9. Compare humanist writing to vernacular writing. Humanist writings used classical Latin in their works. Vernacular writing was when the author wrote in their local language. Humanist writings believed their use of Latin was in line with the traditional writings of the past. Writing in the vernacular, however, allowed authors to write in a language understood by locals.

The Renaissance spread to Europe through various means: Warfare – the Thirty Years War fought between France, Spain and Italy over the wealth of Italy Trading – Milan and Venice had strong trade routes to other parts of Europe Italian Renaissance artists moved to other parts of Europe and took the culture with them The printing press helped spread the humanist ideas to all of Europe
