6. Absences…. When at home: Always check schoolwires. Most of the time, I will have uploaded a worksheet, activity or the required reading. Look at the calendar for upcoming due dates, too. Once you have returned to school: Check the “Absent” basket with the appropriate date and week. Please see your teacher before or after class for further instruction, if needed. For every day absent, your student has two days to turn in work due during the absence before the assignment is counted as late.

7. Late Work Policy  Students will not be penalized for late work on an assignment. We will be following the Late Work Policy for LHMS. Students will lose 30% on the first day the assignment is late. After the unit deadline, no points will be awarded.  Deadlines:  1st QuarterOct 31st  2nd QuarterJan 23rd  3rd QuarterMar 20 th  4th QuarterJune 3 rd  Again, no work from the previous weeks of the quarter will be accepted after these dates.

8. PACE  PACE will be held on April 15 th, 2015. This day is a half day for 8 th graders only.  PACE is comprised of three components: paper, speech, and visual aid (PowerPoint)  The paper will be written based on the experiment done in science this year. The paper will utilize the lab report written during 1 st semester.  Please make sure you understand your experiment and the results that you document. This will comprise a great deal of your PACE paper.  NOTE: Take pictures while you do your science experiment (2 nd Qtr.). Those pictures can be used in your PowerPoint.

9. OUR YEAR AT A GLANCE…  This year we will be covering four units of study.  Our first unit is Investigations. The discussion of mysteries as well as reading mysterious passages AND writing about nonfiction anomalies will be a part of this quarter. A mystery (short story) will be written in October.  The second unit is Changes. We will be discussing dystopian societies and the changes that occur to make society different. Students master the Venn Diagram by learning to compare and contrast.  Our third unit is Communication. This our PACE unit. We also cover email and texting communication.  Our final unit is Perspectives. In this unit we analyze literature from different points of view. Later in the unit we will debate using non-fiction conflicts (i.e. Wind Energy) and allow students to investigate different perspectives to form an educated opinion.
