1 Systems Development Cheryl Itkin SIMCorB Meeting RTP, NC June 29-30, 2000 SIMCorB Organization Policy Systems Outreach
2
SIMCorBSIMCorB 2 Spotlight on Integration (8.4) n Agency Support ä Integrated Information Initiative (I-3) Effort ä EIMS is the Agency Level-II metadata repository (OEI/ORD MOU) n Integrated Platform for Development ä ORD’s Integrated Geospatial Server n Supporting National Standards ä Implications of EIMS as NSDI node
3
SIMCorBSIMCorB 3 Integration Objectives n Manage, share and use the EPA’s inventory of heterogeneous data sources n Capture, store and analyze real-world coordinates for representing metadata n Integrate metadata with geospatial data n Support advanced and integrated web functionality for GIS, Modeling and Scientific Data Visualization n NSDI Clearinghouse -FGDC compliant
4
SIMCorBSIMCorB 4 Development Environment
5
SIMCorBSIMCorB 5 Expected Outcomes n Increased EIMS content in a single ORD (Agency) inventory n Integration of metadata with datasets, databases and tools in support of integrated analytical applications n Data integration (DFW) and generic analytical tools available on the web n Reduces duplication of effort by sharing the Agency’s investments in data and analytical tools n Establish and maintain Agency is NSDI/FGDC- compliant (EO12904) and publish to a National Network
6
SIMCorBSIMCorB 6 I-3 Place Ambient Components n Integrated Information Initiative: ä EPA Region 3 Pilot (Deadline October 2000) n The I-3 work plan ä Geospatial Data library Index (ORD) ä Internet geoservices:Integrated data server and expanding EnviroMapper (ORD) ä Geospatial data acquisition ä Locational data improvement/cleanup ä Spatially enable STORET ä Spatially enable AQS
7
SIMCorBSIMCorB 7 Integrated EIMS and I-3 Effort n ORD section of the I-3 work plan includes: ä Establish the server environment to support development of new technologies n Server Charter and configuration ä Extend EIMS - add a geospatial schema to EIMS that supports linkages between metadata and geospatial data ä EIMS > EnviroMapper Integration ä Geospatial Resource inventory
8
SIMCorBSIMCorB 8 Integrated Geospatial Server n Description: (Server needs a name) ä SUN E4500 quad-processors, 4GB memory, 360 GB disk space. n Location: ä RTP NCC development environment operated by NTSD thru WCF program n Users: ä Agency spatial application developers n Availability: ä currently being configured to support EIMS and I-3 pilot. (Oracle 8i Spatial and ESRI Spatial Data Engine SDEs) ä developer access starting mid-July 2000 n Intended Use: ä development platform for web-enabled analytical tools n GIS n Modeling n Visualization
9
SIMCorBSIMCorB 9 Integrated Geospatial Server
10
SIMCorBSIMCorB 10 Integrated Geospatial Data
11
SIMCorBSIMCorB 11 Spatially Enabling EIMS n Extend EIMS database to support geospatial data ä georeference addresses (points) and footprints (boundaries/areas) which represent metadata records n Interactive web-enabled map interface for EIMS ä EnviroMapper embedded interface in advanced search form ä EnviroMapper embedded interface in display of search results ä EnviroMapper in the create/edit metadata records to create metadata footprints ä Eliminate need for static cross-reference tables.
15
SIMCorBSIMCorB 15 EIMS as NSDI Node n First EPA node to Publish to the National Spatial Data Infrastructure ä (tested February 2000/ production July 2000) n NSDI/FGDC-compliant ä EIMS is FGDC compliant (see document, Meta Manager FGDC EIMS Data Model Mappings, February 2000) ä Make EPA FGDC-Compliant and provides a mechanism for publication to the NSDI n Increases interest and participation from EPA Regional offices (Regions 2,5,8,9,10 recently added) n Working with OEI to establish business rules and policy for geospatial metadata and tools in EIMS
16
Collection 1 Collection 2 Collection 3 Collection n... Clearinghouse Gateway (1 of 6 sites in US) WWW Browser Query Response Metadata and Data How it Works. USGS EPA (EIMS) NASA
17
NASA USGS EPA A User Searches NSDI Clearinghouse Gateway … And Discovers Data Documented in EPA’s EIMS US Environmental Protection Agency Meta Manager
19
SIMCorBSIMCorB 19 Next Steps n Increase EIMS content n Develop technologies for an integrated environment n Guidance on agency policy for using geospatial metadata standards n Feedback from SIMCorB
