Practice Educator Briefing MSW and BASW - 2015/16

Aims of the session Clarify the nature of the practice learning experience Outline roles & responsibilities Familiarisation with the Practice Learning Documentation & Domains of the Professional Capabilities Framework

Placement Dates MSW MSW Practice Learning One 70 days
7th September th December 2015 Recall days - 9th October 2015 & 20th November 2015 Recall days count as placement days and therefore students must attend

7th September th February 2016 Recall days - 9th October 2015 & 11th December 2015 Recall days count as placement days and therefore students must attend

BASW Placement Dates BASW Practice Learning One 70 days
28th September th January 2016 Recall days - 5th November 2015 & 17th December 2015 Recall days count as placement days and therefore students must attend - students will receive teaching for a module on recall days

BASW Placement Dates BASW Practice Learning Two 100 days
5th October th March 2016 Recall days - 26th November 2015 &14th January 2016 Recall days count as placement days and therefore students must attend - students will receive teaching for their Integrative study on these days

Placement Arrangements
All placements are full time The full number of placement days must be completed 35 hours per week includes 3.5 hours study time (does not include lunch) Study time may be taken as one day per fortnight 10 days allowance (includes statutory bank holidays) - to be used for emergencies & unexpected circumstances

Practice Learning Process
Pre Placement Meeting Learning Agreement Meeting Midway Review of Practice Minimum of 2 direct observations in Practice Learning One & 3 in Practice Learning Two 1 observation completed by the Midway Review of Practice Learning Agreement Meeting in first two weeks of practice learning - notify DD & agency PL Co-coordinator if this has not taken place

Assessment - PCF One framework for professional development in SW
Provides comprehensive framework for professional development across all areas of SW practice Shows and enables progression through career levels Emphasis is on professional capability Role of practice educator has become more important in making decisions about that capability

Assessment using the PCF
Social work practice is a complex activity, requiring an interplay of knowledge, skills and values The nine domains of the PCF are interdependent Assessing learning, performance and progression against the Domains of the PCF requires an approach congruent with the framework. Holistic assessment is a recognised approach for assessing capability

Professional Capabilities Framework
Social work practice is complex Assessment against the nine domains of the PCF Judgements about performance made against individual elements of the framework and on overall professional capability - focus on an integrated approach Evidence will need to show how students bring their skills, knowledge and values together across all the domains - practice educator requires skills in judging the whole practice

Holistic Assessment Assessment is progressive
Assessment must be consistent with the appropriate level descriptor Sufficient evidence across all nine domains The process of assessment must be trustworthy, reliable and transparent Evidence must include the ability to reflect critically, use knowledge and research Student will contribute evidence towards the assessment Professional judgement of the practice educator about sufficiency of evidence

Confidentiality & Consent Policy
No information included in report that allows service users, carers or placement agency to be identified Anonymity of service users & carers must be preserved The placement agency should not be identified

Practice Educator Responsibilities
Ensure work is available to enable student to meet curriculum requirements Arrange regular supervision sessions Observe practice Make an overall judgement about whether capability has been demonstrated against each Domain Submit a report - please make every effort to submit on scheduled submission date

Work Based Supervisor Responsibilities
Participate in Learning Agreement Meeting & Midway Review Meeting Manage and allocate the work being undertaken Provide day to day supervision & offer support Provide ongoing feedback & supply evidence of capability to the Practice Educator

Student Responsibilities
Arrange Learning Agreement Meeting Engage in practice learning as specified in the practice learning agreement Participate in the evaluation & assessment process & submit assessed work on time Behave in accordance with agency policies, practices and procedures Collate & submit the practice learning documentation

Tutor Responsibilities
Chair the Learning Agreement Meeting & Review of Practice Meeting Provide guidance on practice learning documentation Assist with issues that might arise during practice learning Convene & chair concerns meetings Emphasise need to contact tutor if any issues arise and that this should be done early.

Social Networking Policy
Does you agency have a social networking policy? What are your organisations expectations in respect of students use of social networking? Please discuss your expectations as part of the induction process

Car Insurance If a student is using a car on placement comprehensive business cover needs to be in place Confirmed at the Learning Agreement Meeting Placement providers are strongly advised to check insurance documentation
