2  Twitter  Hi5  Friendster  MySpace  LinkedIn – business-oriented social networking  ASmallWorld- an exclusive invitation-only network  Cyworld – South Korean social network service; uses “avatars”  XING- social networking for professionals  Tagged – based in San Francisco; games & share gifts  Orkut – owned/operated by Google Inc.; most popular in India & Brazil

3  Social network/utility service – launched in February 2004  Started by Harvard college students  More than 500 million users  Controversial & blocked in several countries (ie: China, Syria, Pakistan, Iran, Uzbekistan…)  A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as “the most used social network by worldwide monthly active users, followed by MySpace.” (Vandersluis, 2004)
