1 What makes substation work?
What is in a substation? What makes substation work?

2 Parts of a substation 1. Primary power lines 7. Current transformer
2. Ground wire 8. Lightning arrester 3. Overhead lines 9. Main transformer 4. Transformer for measurement of electric voltage 10. Control building 5. Disconnect switch 11. Security fence 6. Circuit breaker 12. Secondary power lines

3 Primary and Secondary Power Lines
1. Primary power lines 7. Current transformer 2. Ground wire 8. Lightning arrester 3. Overhead lines 9. Main transformer Transports electricity into the substation at high voltages and out of the substation at safe voltages. (Safe for the needs of the community.) 4. Transformer for measurement of electric voltage 10. Control building 5. Disconnect switch 11. Security fence 6. Circuit breaker 12. Secondary power lines

4 Ground Wire What do you think a “ground wire” does? Ground wires prevent user contact with dangerous voltage if electrical insulation fails.

5 In your own words, write what you think these do.
Overhead Wires 1. Primary power lines 7. Current transformer 2. Ground wire 8. Lightning arrester 3. Overhead lines 9. Main transformer 4. Transformer for measurement of electric voltage 10. Control building In your own words, write what you think these do. 5. Disconnect switch 11. Security fence 6. Circuit breaker 12. Secondary power lines

6 Transformers 1. Primary power lines 7. Current transformer

7 Transformers What do you think Transformers do? Transformers can be used to vary the relative voltage of circuits or isolate them, or both.

8 Transformers Transformer for measurement of electric voltage
Current transformer Main transformer

9 Disconnect Switch What do you think a disconnect switch does?
In electrical engineering, a disconnector, disconnect switch or is used to ensure that an electrical circuit is completely de-energised.

10 Circuit Breaker What do you think a circuit breaker does?
A circuit breaker is a manually or automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit.

11 Lightning Arrester What do you think a lightning arrester does?
A lightning arrester is a device used on electrical power systems and telecommunications systems to protect the insulation and conductors of the system from the damaging effects of lightning. The typical lightning arrester has a high-voltage terminal and a ground terminal. When a lightning surge (or switching surge, which is very similar) travels along the power line to the arrester, the current from the surge is diverted through the arrestor, in most cases to earth.

12 Control Building and Security Fence
1. Primary power lines 7. Current transformer 2. Ground wire 8. Lightning arrester 3. Overhead lines 9. Main transformer 4. Transformer for measurement of electric voltage 10. Control building In your own words, write what you think these do. 5. Disconnect switch 11. Security fence 6. Circuit breaker 12. Secondary power lines

13 Can you list the parts of a substation and say what they do?
