2
Forms of Energy What are the different forms of energy? Energy forms are either potential or kinetic. Potential energy comes in forms that are stored including — chemical, gravitational, mechanical, and nuclear. Kinetic energy forms are doing work — like electrical, heat, light, motion, and sound.
3
Something that’s not doing anything right now but could be doing something. Wait, what is potential energy? Like me every night, just staring blankly at my homework?
4
Nice metaphor. It’s more like when you stretch a rubber band. When you hold it stretched out, is it moving? Could it move? Let’s think... Why does a stretched rubber band have potential energy? The potential energy is there, but it’s only when you let go that something happens. The stored energy of the stretched rubber band is what we call potential energy. It is stored there because of the position of the object.
5
IDEAS? What are some other examples of potential energy that you can think of ?
6
Potential Energy Holding a bowling ball 3 feet above the ground Pulling an arrow back on a bow A car parked at the top of a hill A boulder sitting at the top of a mountain Water behind a dam Pressure in an unopened soda bottle Energy that is stored
7
Something that’s doing something, like something falling or in motion. So can you guess what kinetic energy is? Like you getting in gear and actually doing your homework?
8
More like the energy that propels the rubber band through the air. It’s when energy is active, and is causing something to be in motion. Kinetic energy is what causes objects to be in motion. Can we think of any examples?
9
IDEAS? What are some other examples of kinetic energy that you can think of ?
10
Kinetic Energy A bowling ball dropping to the ground A car zooming down the highway Kicking a soccer ball A roller coaster whizzing through loops An arrow flying through the air Energy that is active
11
PAUSE Let’s try demonstrating the two forms of energy...
12
POTENTIAL ENERGY Any brave volunteers?
13
KINETIC ENERGY Remember, safety comes first!
14
When you go home tonight, think about the forms of energy, potential and kinetic. Can you find examples in everyday life of these two forms of energy? Be prepared to come to class and share.
