The Mitten Problem  After finding a seat, please begin the Mitten Problem. 1. Read the problem to yourself. 2. Then discuss your ideas with your group. 3. Record your thinking.

Energy What is energy? It is the capacity of a physical system to perform work or to move an object. The total energy of a system remains constant even though energy may transform or transfer into another form of energy.

ENERGY Electrical Energy Heat Energy Light Energy Kinetic (Motion) Energy Sound Energy 4-5 Energy

Energy is... Electrical Energy: The energy associated with electric charges and their movements. For example, circuits provide a means of transferring electrical energy. Heat Energy: This energy is produced in many ways such as burning, rubbing, or mixing one substance with another. Heat energy flows from warmer objects to cooler ones until both reach the same temperature. Energy of Motion (Kinetic): This is the energy of an object which results from its motion. Light Energy: This energy travels in a straight line until it strikes an object. Light can be reflected by a mirror or lens or absorbed by an object. Sound Energy: This is the energy produced by making things vibrate. Sound energy is transferred through the air from a source to an observer.

Lighting a Bulb 1.With a partner connect a wire or wires, battery and a bulb in different ways. 2.Use your t-chart to draw: at least 2 pictures of ways the bulb lit and at least 2 pictures of ways the bulb did not light.

Observations Draw one set up that lit and one that did not using marker, then post on the appropriate chart. What is similar about the set ups that lit? What is similar about the set ups that did not light?

Where’s the Energy in this system? With your partner, use your schematic drawing to identify where and what kinds of energy are in this system. What happens to energy when it seems to stop in a system?

Where’s The Energy?  In grade level groups, examine the science modules that you currently teach.  Identify places where energy could be more explicitly taught and identified.  Record your ideas on the back of your light bulb system and be ready to share.

Wrap it up! On your index card, please write about: 1. Something that resonated with you. 2. Something you learned. 3. Questions and/or comments
