1
Transfer of Energy Law of Conservation of Energy
2
What is Energy? The ability to do work #1 source of energy is the sun
3
Our Food Energy is measured in Calories
4
2 types of Energy 1. Potential energy-energy that is stored 2. Kinetic Energy-energy in motion
5
6 forms of energy M-Mechanical something that moves (ex. Pinwheel, waterwheel, paddleboat) C-Chemical-Stores up molecules-battery, digestion H-Heat –Thermal Energy, Heating and Cooling S-Sound-Sound Vibrations L-Light –Illumination E-Electrical Energy-plug ins
7
Law of Conservation of Energy Energy can not be created nor can it be destroyed. It can only be transferred.
8
Heat Energy Heat will always transfer from hot to cold Heat will cause objects to expand Without heat, objects will contract Insulation, wood, glass, rubber, plastic act as insulators
9
3 ways that heat can move 1. Conduction-allows heat to transfer through solid object 2. Convection-molecules move from liquid to gases 3. Radiation-energy moves through rays and waves-X-Rays, microwaves
10
Light Energy Transfer Light occurs through Illumination Electromagnetic Spectrum Roy G Biv Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet Light can pass through empty space
11
Light is either Transparent-Can see through Translucent-Frosty Opaque-Can’t see through at all
12
Light Absorbs matter Dark absorbs more, while light reflects
13
Reflection Light bounces off objects
14
Refraction Bends light
15
Kinetic energy Energy in motion
16
Potential Energy Energy in position or that is stored
17
All Roller Coasters obey the same law Galileo's Stop Height Positive and Negative G Force
