European Life Sciences Infrastructure for Biological Information www.elixir-europe.org Subtask: 11.1.2 TeSS Training Portal Subtask lead: Terri Attwood

Introduction A pilot training portal, TeSS, has been developed by ELIXIR-UK for aggregating, disseminating & discovering ELIXIR-wide training info including activities, events, materials, etc. allows users to collect (‘package’) resources needed for training & offers ‘workflows’ to facilitate navigation through specific training tasks intended to coordinate training events/resources dispersed across ELIXIR member websites & beyond, & help users determine their relevance What’s the audience of this course (beginner, advanced...)? How long is it? Where’s it being held? Which course should I take next? Etc… also intended to complement GOBLET & obviate the need for ELIXIR to build yet another repository Long version: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qGwhVhLTqtRb0QmachftQdXIZKfu1IFG DKqJHftIWbA/edit

Overall aim The overall aims of subtask 11.1.2 are to ‘harden’ the TeSS prototype - using a more flexible/extensible platform harnessing data from ELIXIR Nodes, EXCELERATE WP6-9 use-cases & 3 rd - party providers, & synergising with the GOBLET repository make ELIXIR-EXCELERATE training activities/materials discoverable surfacing information in ways that support user decisions & choices via training packages & workflows encourage uptake via community-building events for trainers/trainees, resource providers/developers (inc. industry/SMEs) release TeSS as an open resource, shaped by the community & by the outputs of EXCELERATE’s use-cases (D11.1, M30)

People involved Partners involved are as follows: 11.1.2. TeSS Training Portal NodePartnerPM Workshop (€k) ELIXIR-CHSIB3 ELIXIR-NLDTL/NBIC2.65 ELIXIR-PTICG3 ELIXIR-UKUoOxford12 ELIXIR-UKUoManchester26.4 Total per WP47.050

Objectives for 2016 By 1 st December 2016, the subtask will have delivered: 1.TeSS requirements roadmap & development workplan 2.Standards & curation protocols, to be used for describing & sharing training materials & announcing training events 3.TeSS beta, with content migrated from the TeSS Pilot & implemented using the new underlying platform (SEEK, Rails) including all features from the pilot, fully tested & hardened

Deliverables (D) & milestones (M) (until 1 st Dec 2016) Month M: Requirements gathering from stakeholders3 D: Report on requirements, including implementation workplan4 M: First tranche feeds4 D: Release TeSS alpha 26 M: Draft training material & announcement standards & curation protocols 8 D: TeSS beta API12 D: Release TeSS beta with selection of content & first feeds12

Activities (until 1 st Dec 2016)Month Workshop for gathering user requirements2 Workshop with training standards group6 Workshop with trainers, content providers & developers to validate TeSS alpha 8 Workshop on interoperability with other ELIXIR services (Tools Registry, Hub’s contextualisation service, iAnn events registry, metrics registry, etc.) 10

Critical issues & dependencies 1.Progress with SEEK/Rails migration 2.Migration of content from TeSS Pilot to TeSS EXCELERATE 3.Volatility of feeds from content providers 4.Maturity of APIs from other services & registries with which TeSS needs to interoperate Full risk assessment to be included in the TeSS workplan.
