2 BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO WBHO WBHO was established in 1970 WBHO is one of the largest construction companies in Southern Africa The current turnover is R 14,5 billion per annum A third of the turnover is generated outside the borders of the country Current staff compliment is 2000 and 6500 wage earners The company employs a number of sub contractors WBHO has three divisions, namely:- 1.Roads and Earthworks 2.Building 3.Civil WBHO currently executes projects in the SADC region, Sierra Leon and Zambia through the above mentioned divisions

5 HOW WE OVERCAME THE CHALLENGES MATERIAL PROCUREMENT 1.We purchased almost all the required reinforcing in stock length 2.Checked the quarries if they had enough aggregates and checked their other commitments. 3.We never used a quarry for backfilling, we reused all material by crushing and screening 4.Various meetings with the professional team, helped in making sure that most of the material/equipment to be used was locally available

6 HOW WE OVERCAME THE CHALLENGES (cont’d) LABOUR UNRESTS 1.There was unrest that threatened completion, PLA was in place and amended to the labour’s needs 2.Bonus incentives were put in place 3.With the help of the LOC, free tickets to workers were issued SKILLS SHORTAGE 1.We trained most of our core labour force and that of the locals on a regular basis. 2.We never experienced it that much except where the key staff was stretched. 3.This stadium was built by an all South African team. The professional and construction teams were all locally based.

7 DEALING WITH FIFA SPECIFICATIONS The structural engineer and the architectural teams had teamed up with companies that had built stadiums before Interface meeting were held to ascertain specifications required by FIFA The specifications were requested to be issued early so we could familiarize ourselves with them

8 CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY The stadium has two tiers, formed of raking beams, y-columns and slabs in between levels We had special shutters designed to form non standard sizes Raking beams, which were traditional pre-cast elements, were constructed in-situ Seating planks were also pre-cast Pre-casting some of these major elements saved us time and cost Stadium design was in a way that made cranage positioning easier

9 BUDGET AND DEADLINE Through the innovations we made as a team, we managed to save time. Being wise in material procurement and crushing and screening on site, a considerable cost saving ensue as we did not buy any commercial material Cost saving in not to source and rehab a quarry. In-situ versus pre-cast elements also helped in saving on time
