OVERVIEW Why introducing AMS in Pakistan? What is AMS(Advanced metering system)? Our Client. Testing and results. Our approach. Project timeline 20 January 2015
3
WHY INTRODUCING AMS IN PAKISTAN? 20 January 2015
4
PROBLEM Pakistan is swamped with energy crises and it hasn’t been able to meet the energy requirement of the general public for many years. 20 January 2015
5
MAJOR REASONS High growth in demand side. Slow or no development work in supply side. High variability in the usage of energy. Electricity theft -Reported more than 80 billion per annum. 20 January 2015
6
BENEFITS OF AMS Two-way communication (meter to utility company & vice versa). Increased meter reading accuracy. Easier energy theft detection. Flexible billing cycles. Reduced support expenses. Improved energy management due to consumption-based customer profiling. 20 January 2015
7
WHAT IS AMS? Advanced metering is the technology of automatically collecting consumption, diagnostic and status data from energy metering device(gas, electric, water etc) and transferring that data to central database for billing, troubleshooting and analyzing. It is a two way communication technology. 20 January 2015

COUNTRIES WORKING ON AMS. Following countries are working or have implemented Advanced metering system: Pakistan (in progress). Italy Brazil Netherland UK Australia France Canada USA Sri Lanka 20 January 2015

CLIENT RESPONSE We presented our idea to K-Electric and their manufacturers KBK Electronics Ltd. KBK already working on idea of smart metering. They asked us to work with them on this idea jointly. They wanted us to design its server site DLMS protocol only. 20 January 2015
13
WHAT IS DLMS/COSEM PROTOCOL? “Device Language Message specification” and “Companion Specification for Energy Metering”. DLMS/COSEM together is a application layer communication protocol and an interface model for metering applications. It can be used over TCP/IP or UDP/IP. DLMS/COSEM is based on a strict client- server structure. The server is meant to be written in the meter and client accessing the meter could be gateway or central office. Other use cases where the server is within the gateway and the client is in the central office. 20 January 2015
14
TESTING & RESULTS 20 January 2015
15
OUR APPROACH After doing a little part of server site code we came over the constraint of client server communication. To overcome this constraint we decided to design a physical emulator which will work as gateway between meter and server. For emulator we will be using programmable micro- controllers. Once the controller will be connected with meter and server it will start communication between them through secure network which is DLMS Protocol. 20 January 2015

PROJECT TIMELINE 20 January 2015 JAN - FEB ’15 Literature review of existing systems and meter. Studying and understanding all parts of meter. Programming of micro-controller MARCH ’15 Integration of meter with our controller. Overcome integration issues if occur. Coding of client site in the protocol. APR - MAY ‘15 Final testing of system. Practical implementation in KBK Electronics.
