Tim McLernon Faculty of Engineering THE MODEL EXPLAINED Transition from the traditional, didactic classroom approach towards a more free, independent learning environment

Tim McLernon Faculty of Engineering THE MODEL EXPLAINED Operationalise key theories: Learning by Doing Engendering a Deep Approach to learning Contextualise the learning Add student responsibility for their own learning

Tim McLernon Faculty of Engineering A model to help Engineering students to learn independently Kolbs Experiential Learning Cycle Learning by doing promotes understanding and retention

Tim McLernon Faculty of Engineering Learning by doing A model to help Engineering students to learn independently Applying Kolbs theory as a Student Learning Cycle Adding in CONTEXT using problem/project based learning Facilitating reflection Engaging in Dialogue and giving Feedback

Tim McLernon Faculty of Engineering Learning by doing A model to help Engineering students to learn independently PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING A particularly significant outcome of research, development and practice in higher education has been the advent of problem-based learning (PBL) as a mechanism to get students to think. Problem-based learning has been described by Barbara Duch of the University of Delaware as: … an instructional method that challenges students to learn to learn, working cooperatively in groups to seek solutions to real world problems. These problems are used to engage students curiosity and initiate learning the subject matter. PBL prepares students to think critically and analytically, and to find and use appropriate learning resources.
