Hardware Software What is the hardware? The hardware are the physical parts of a computer system, that you can feel or touch. What is the software? The software is the set of instructions that make the computer system do something.

Main or Internal Memory: This is used to store all the data and instructions which the computer is going to use or the answer it has produced. ROM: Read Only Memory RAM: Random Access Memory ROM: ROM cannot be changed, even by switching the computer off. ROM would be useless for doing work or running programs, though, because we normally want to change things. RAM: RAM stores anything that needs to be changed, all the data and all the programs that are being used are stored here. Normally a computer´s RAM is more bigger than its ROM because it needs to hold far more.

Operating system or system software: keep the computer usable. Applications and programs: Allow users to use the computer to play a game, for example to write a letter. Examples of general –purpose applications: Word-processing memory: to produce letters and reports. Graphical User Interface: uses graphics to stand for more complicated actions that the user wants to carry out. Human Computer Interface: controls what users see on screen. Command- Line Interface: Communicate with the computer, but you have to type in an specific way.

Hardware: you can touch it, it is made of physical objects. Software: set of instructions for using the solid objects

Computer: is a device, or a group of devices, designed to do something, such as process information or control a system. The hardware can be divided into several types of device: Input Device: is used to put data into the computer Processor: does something with the data given by the input device. Output Device: tells someone or something the results that the processor had. Storage Device: keeps all the data and the software that is used.

Bit: Binary Digit (0 o 1) Byte: 8 bites Kilobyte: 1024 bytes Megabyte: 1024 kilobyte Gigabyte: 1024 megabyte Terabyte: 1024 gigabyte

Mainframe: Companies and universities started using large, big slow computers. Terminal: Usually a keyboard and a monitor screen which lets a person have their own connection to the computer, the were called personal computers. Portable Computers: for more comfort, they are portable, such as laptops and notebooks. Palmtops: Uses stylus to operate symbols, including a keyboard, on a screen. This are called personal digital assistance. Smartphone: A mobile phone is included.
