Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I C hoose One: Debra and I were at the University Village QFC. ‘Choose one for your birthday’ she says to me. I chose one that looked unusual and designee. I liked the linear quality. Keepsake: Birthday Memory

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I @ home: Keepsake shot Just in case it didn’t do too well in the house, I decided to shoot it while it still looked healthy. Keepsake: Birthday Memory

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I S et Up: Key light The main light came from a picture window in the living. Only about half of the picture window was a light source. A secondary light came from a skylight above which was lighting the room. Otherwise, the background would have been very much darker. My final shot ultimately uses my daughter’s self portrait painting as the background. Keepsake: Birthday Memory

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I S cene Lighting: Natural HDR One of the assignment ‘require’ is to avoid having a light source in the background. With the light source shot, that is impossible. The top example shows the picture- window correctly exposed but the subject is a black silhouette. That’s to be expected because of the HDR ‘harsh’ lighting condition. The bottom example shows the same scene with the fill-flash turned on. The flash can also be manually adjusted to bias ‘-1.5’ f/stop. Fill-flash allows you to view the scene more naturally. Keepsake: Birthday Memory

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I B eing a Magician: Even with the best of skills, photography without manipulation can not capture and reproduce true reality. A good image maker knows the magic required to massage the camera original image into a believable final image. Keepsake: Birthday Memory

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I P acking for Meaning: Besides the warm color scheme that I wanted for the background, I used my daughter’s self portrait painting in the background for the relationship connection. Keepsake: Birthday Memory
