3  Recording the chief complaint of patient’s problem by: ◦ Face the sitting patient ◦ introduce yourself to the patient ◦ asking why patient is there ◦ recording patient’s answer in patient’s own words ◦ Don’t jump on the tooth at first AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

4  determining onset  determining intensity  determining duration  determining location  determining factors that affect the symptom(s) (for example the response to heat or cold)  determining constitutional symptom(s) (ex. 5 Reviewing dental history by:  investigating patient’s past dental history  Did the patient receive any treatment prior to arriving?  Has the patient had similar dental problems before?  Has the patient had any other symptoms since the last dental appointment?  What specific problems has the patient had with their mouth and teeth? 6  evaluating medical history by determining: ◦ current meds; ◦ allergies to medications (ex. Peniciline); ◦ In doubt refer to a stomatologist for researching pharmacology; AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

7  evaluating medical history by: ◦ determining medical status to include:  reviewing previous hospitalizations,  previous surgeries and  serious illnesses AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

8 Some conditions to watch for:  Unstable Cardiac disorders  Hypertension  Angina  Endocarditis (need pretreatment medication)  Past Head and neck radiotherapy AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

9 Some conditions to watch for:  Imunocompromised patient  HIV  Cancers  Diabetes, cirrhosis  Medications: such as steroids, chemotherapy, radiation, immunosuppressive post- transplant medications AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

11  Social history is a record of the social and familial circumstances of the patient.  The dental team should be aware of several factors related to treatment planning and clinical management in order to treat these patients sensitively and effectively. AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

12  Important issues include behavioral disorders, pain management, cross- infection, medical problems associated with drug abuse, and the ways in which drug abuse and its subsequent treatment affect the dentition. AFAMS Dental Advisor Team

13  The more that practitioners know about types and patterns of drug abuse and recovery programs, the more safely the special needs of these patients can be managed AFAMS Dental Advisor Team
