FORMWORK COST AND CONSIDERATIONS We are reviewing Chapt. 1&2 and we assigned Chapt. 3 & 4 for reading assignment!!! Chapter One- Introduction to Forming Chapter Two- General Objectives in Formwork Building Chapter Three-Overall Planning for Formwork Chapter Four-Materials, Accessories, Proprietary Products Book Overview

What is forming and formwork? What is its purpose? What are the objectives of any form design? The form design must provide, THE BEST QUALITY SAFETY ECONOMICS What kind of nomenclature or terminology is associated with forming? Discussion of some Case Studies on Pages 2-4 to 2-8 FORMWORK COST AND CONSIDERATIONS

What considerations should be made when considering the economics and planning of formwork? 1. Must be treated as an integral part of the overall plan 2. Must be used efficiently 3. Must permit a nominal investment for single use and an optimum investment for multiple reuse 4. Must consider availability of skilled labor 5. Must consider availability of stock/ special materials 6. Must be adapted to work with the structure requirements 7. Must consider the practical construction sequence FORMWORK COST AND CONSIDERATIONS

What will determine an efficient formwork system? 1. Analysis of placing schedules (p.13, fig 3-11,3-12 ) 2. Stripping time requirements 3. Accessibility 4. Existing site conditions 5. Capacity of form handling equipment FORMWORK COST AND CONSIDERATIONS

What components or factors make up the development of a formwork system? 1. The capacity of mixing and placing equipment (p.3-2, fig 3-1 & 3-2) 2.Construction joints between adjacent sections - limits size of lifts/placements 3. Form Detailing(p.2-13 fig 2-9) 4. Re-use of forms- stripping time, movement capability,etc.(p.3-4, fig 3-3) 5. Location of form construction i.e site, prefab, ready-made(proprietary) (p.3-5, fig. 3-4) {slipform- 15-3,15-4} {gang forms 9-20, flyforms-9-50} 6. Type of surface providing support (i.e. concrete, sand, clay, etc.) 7. Reshoring Requirements 8. Weather - (i.e. protection vs. stripping time) FORMWORK COST AND CONSIDERATIONS

What directly influence the cost? 1. Maximum re-use of materials (p3-7,fig3-6) 2.Uniformity of sections (p.2-12 #8 & fig 2-9) 3. Minimum # of forms used for the maxi- mum # of times. 4. Maintenance of smooth job flow 5. Efficient setup and stripping (p.3-11, fig 3-10) 6. Labor cost - minimum skilled-unskilled labor ratio 7. Labor cost to the type of hardware- i.e some ties require more labor to install 8. Rental of forms vs. building in shop (p.3-5, fig 3-4) FORMWORK COST AND CONSIDERATIONS

What are different method of pricing formwork? 1. It may be included in the lump sum price for the entire job. 2.In may be included in the unit paid per cubic yard of concrete in place. 3. A separate unit price per square foot of formed area is established. FORMWORK COST AND CONSIDERATIONS
