What is open source code software? CONTENTS What is certification mark? Application of Linux Application of robotics Things that oppose open source code s/w Links Things that support open source code s/w Conclusion

What is open source code software? Open source doesn't just mean access to the source code.Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of Process. Eg:Downloading games

Free Redistribution Source Code Derived Works No Discrimination Against Persons or Groups No Discrimination Against Fields of Endeavor Distribution of License License Must Not Be Specific to a Product License Must Not Restrict Other Software License Must Be Technology- Neutral The distribution terms of open-source s/w must have the following criteria:

What is certification mark? Unfortunately, the term "open source" itself is subject to misuse, and because it's considered descriptive, it can't currently be legally protected as a trademark.OSI is registering a trademark, Open Source Initiative Approved, for this purpose.

Open Source Initiative(OSI): The Open Source Initiative is a non-profit corporation formed to educate about and advocate for the of open source and to build bridges among different benefits. constituencies in the open- source community

Links The OSI Service may provide, or third parties may provide, links to other World Wide Web sites or resources. Because OSI has no control over such sites and resources, you acknowledge and agree that OSI is not responsible for the availability of such external sites or resources, and does not endorse and is not responsible or liable for any Content, advertising, products or other materials on or available from such sites or resources

Application of Linux in open source code software CentOS is an "enterprise-class" Linux distribution. It is derived from the enterprise offerings of the commercial Red Hat distribution. Basically, since the latter is open source (and uses other open source packages), The Ubuntu family is one of the most popular Linux distribution of late. Ubuntu comes with a GNOME desktop, Kubuntu with a KDE one and Xubuntu with a Xfce desktop environment. Open SUSE, formerly SUSE, is a well known Linux distribution from Novell, with a good support for a variety of hardware. You can download either the DVD or CD versions of Linux, GNOME or KDE versions, 32-bit, 64-bit or Power-PC versions, etc. Fedora, which began its life as a Red Hat product, is a free Linux distribution offering versions for Intel processors (both 32-bit and 64-bit) as well as PPC. Both GNOME and KDE desktops are provided on the same distribution.

Building a robot isn't easy. Robotics presents a challenging intersection of hardware and software. It reaches across disciplines including: Mechanical Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Electronics, and Computer Programming. Better hardware has made the job less difficult, but the software hasn't followed suit. There is a serious lack of reliable, ready-to-use software components for the robot developer. Application of robotics

Things that oppose open source code software MICROSOFT Microsoft really does want to coexist and cooperate with Open Source software. Microsoft's approach to OSI seeking certification of its Shared Source licenses is another prong of its strategy to maintained extend its domination of microcomputer based software.coexist and cooperate with Open Source software Bill Gates has never retracted his antipathy to sharing source code that he expressed in 1976 Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer, who once characterized Open Source as "a cancer”. Vole's history of anticompetitive practices (DrDOS, Stac Electronics, Netscape, etc.), the antitrust cases in both the US and the EU are against Open Source software, BUT Matt Asay, who was linked to above saying positive things about Microsoft's approach to OSI, is now on the OSI board

Things that support open source code software For the inner core who work on the project, open source is a way of transcending corporate boundaries and getting a critical mass of people to work together, but for the people on the periphery the only benefits of open source are the indirect ones: good software, or cheap software, or software that is immune to the whims and fashions of the marketing people. Linux for someone else to sift through the various open-source tools and projects, find those that work, put them together, and make them easy to install.
