Quality more than Quantity Proposal of new F.O. requirements was instigated by Colgan Air accident. (Requirements may be based on quantity.) Both pilots met ATP hours, and NTSB never cited hours alone. NTSB topics included Training, Oversight, Organizational, Operations, Records, and Simulation Fidelity. Coincidentally, 5-year NTSB study of integrated avionics indicated need for high-fidelity avionics in simulation training, especially for abnormal and reversionary conditions. (Quality v. Quantity also true for simulation)

Real Avionics The most direct road to mastering cockpit integration, abnormal conditions, reversionary modes, task integration.

9
Simulator Fidelity NTSB: More fidelity for high alpha conditions, please. (high angle of attack ~ sometimes low airspeed, high pitch attitude) Full stall and appropriate break.
10
Rotary-wing data acquisition is more complex. Simulator Fidelity Frasca’s Flight Test Department can model wide envelope – including full stall and appropriate break – for airplanes approved for stalls. Alternative sources are NASA research and black boxes.

Decision Making and Judgement SAFTE-SCOR “SCOR”= Scenario Competence Objective Report Point scoring based on scenario. Altitude, Airspeed, Coordination, Tracking, etcetera. Automatic and Repeatable Output for Research, Records, and Debriefing Timeline Report: identify trends and trouble areas. Show effects of Fatigue, Distraction, … Hypoxia Learn the lesson the hard way, safely, then review.

Quality ≈ Quantity Deliberate use of quality simulation makes for cost-effective of flight training. Cockpit layout and aerodynamic performance must be representative for maximum transfer of training. Instrument symbology & buttonology, controls, levers… muscle memory Expected aerodynamic performance (less fiddling with throttle) Level 6 pedigree present in all Frasca devices Often based on flight test data, tuned by the same engineers as Full Flight Simulators Higher acquisition cost, though competitive with aircraft. Recoup cost quickly.

cost Quality ≈ Quantity Deliberate use of quality simulation increases cost- effectiveness of flight training. Save $2,000 per student Instrument Rating: Save $2,000 per student FAA credits = 20 hours @ $100 /hour Save $1,000 - $2,500 per student Private License: Save $1,000 - $2,500 per student 10 – 25 hours above FAA requirements @ $100/hour Recoup $300,000 with 68 private/instrument students Recoup $300,000 with 68 private/instrument students …Including: (≈ $1.50/hour operating costs for electricity, projector bulbs, cleaning supplies, printer supplies)
