2 CHI Report Headlines Herefordshire PCT is a new dynamic and effective organisation The standard of patient care is exceptionally high by any standard We found innumerable examples of innovative best practice CHI was particularly impressed by the record level of staff morale, and patient satisfaction found in its survey. The NHS has much to learn from the Management Team in Herefordshire

4 No Shortcuts If you want a good outcome, the CHI process requires: Hard work, hard work, hard work and a sustained commitment over a long period of time across the PCT

5 Understand the Challenge The review is not designed solely to test: –Policies –Committee structures –Clinical governance planning process The review is designed to test: –How good your organisation is –What do staff and patients think of it –Is care safe and is there a process and culture for improving it

6 The Timetable Pre-review- 3 months from notification to start Weeks 1-5- Preliminary Assessment Weeks 6-7- Pre-visit preparation Week 8- Final Assessment – Review Week Weeks 9-16- Report and Action Planning

7 Pre-Review Preparation Action stations immediately notification is received Establish CHI Steering Group Get the right people involved Identify Trust Co-Ordinator Start managing expectations Implement communications strategies Create positive response to CHI challenge Aim high

8 Pre-Review Stage Invest heavily in getting PCT questionnaire/ information pack completed to a high standard Volunteer what you are not asked for Inform everyone of timetable and start planning availability of key staff (cancel leave?)

9 Preliminary Assessment (Weeks 1-5) Get to know your CHI reviewer Help him or her to make the review a success Help CHI understand your organisation Agree units, departments, practices to be visited Anticipate stakeholder meetings Keep communicating

10 Pre-Visit Preparation (Weeks 6-7) CHI visit to PCT –1 day to brief review team –1 day with PCT Update evidence Influence final form of review Keep communicating to organisation

11 Review Week (Week 8) Look after the review team Have the right people on standby Be prepared to respond to CHI and manage fall out from interviews and visits Interpret the feedback session with caution
