3 After 1783 Treaty of Paris Southwest area in orange/pink was in disputed with Spain Control over the Mississippi was in dispute between Spain, GB, and America Received from the British in the peace agreement to end the Revolutionary War

4 Louisiana Purchase

5 Red River Basin (Treaty of 1818)- G.B. receives everything north of the 49 th parallel. Adams-Onis Treaty- U.S. purchases Florida from Spain ($5,000,000)

6 1845- Texas Annexation 1835- Texan settlers broke away from Mexico and war ensued 1845- U.S. gov’t. formally stepped in and annexed (took) Texas Leads to the Mexican/American War

7 1846 Oregon Treaty Oregon was claimed by several countries but had no gov’t until this treaty Treaty of 1846: U.S. received Oregon territory and GB solidified Canadian boundaries from the 49 th parallel on North Averted possible war with GB

8 Outcome Mexican/American War Gadsden Purchase Video 1848: U.S. wins and receives a large amount of territory (in red) Gadsden Purchase (1853)- land bought from Mexico Why? See video

9 1867 Alaska Purchase Purchased for 7.2 million dollars from Russia Known at the time as “Seward’s Folly” Gold rush soon after Oil boom later on.
