Step 1: 1534 Canada discovered by Jacques Cartier (French) – French begin trade with Indians

Step 2: 1763 Treaty of Paris gives Canada to Great Britain through French & Indian War (7 Year War)

Step 3: 1774 Quebec Act- Let the French be French

Step 4: 1812 Papineau (Quebec) & Mackenzie (Ontario) lead separate revolutions French & English join to protect their land against the U.S. during War of 1812

Step 5: 1867 Canada becomes a “Dominion”, or a self- governing country under control of Great Britain

Step 6: 1914-1945 WWI & WWII- Canada sends troops because of strong ties with Great Britain

Step 7: 1982 Canada becomes “Canada” – Constitutional Monarchy – Bilingual- English & French
