NOAA 2007 Test Deployment off of Hawaii, USA 2007 Deployment in Puget Sound Results originally presented and published by Patricia Plimpton of PMEL/NOAA/US Dept of Commerce and Jerry Mullison of RDI at Oceanology International March 2008
4
Hawaii test deployment 4800m depth Factory defaults Five 50cm bins, first centered at 55cm A one second 14 ping ensemble every 10 minutes 10 minute inductive polling
5
Hawaii 7m depth current meters
6
Hawaii 35m current meters
7
Hawaii temperature data
8
Hawaii Conclusions Setup of 14 pings taken in one second every ten minutes led to noisy current measurements and further averaging was required to do comparison NOAA adjusted setup for future deployments will have longer averages Velocity direction change ties to the remixing of the upper water column seen in the temperature plots Temperature measurements are reasonable for the mixed layer environment
9
Puget Sound Subsurface Mooring Five 50 cm bins, first centered at 152 cm DVS at 140m averaged 840 ping in 60 seconds every 10 minutes DVS at 149m averaged 840 ping in 120 seconds every 10 minutes

Puget Sound temperature data
18
Puget Sound Conclusions Current measurements match well with other instruments DVS OEM SBE38 temperature sensor matched well with the reference instruments Range of ~2-3m matched expected typical profiling range;

BIO DVS Deployment Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Bedford Institute of Oceanography, (BIO) Test and Evaluation of the Doppler Volume Sampler (DVS) BIO performs initial test in early 2008 results presented at IEEE Current Meter Conference Mar08 BIO performs a second deployment in Summer 2008 preliminary results shown here pending BIO’s publication
