6 Social exclusion? –A shorthand term for what can happen when people, or areas, experience a combination of linked circumstances. 16 Individually, be more inclusive by: –Increasing diversity awareness –Checking where stereotyping affects work –Overcoming physical & mental barriers to services –Assessing whether the way things are done are excluding –Developing person-centred skills and practice Active listening Effective communication Constructive criticism & assertiveness Evaluation (with user participation) Finding people behind the jargon…..

17 Help organisations be more inclusive by playing a part in: –On-going learning about diversity –Use of management systems (e.g.induction & appraisal) to improve inclusive working –Equipping staff with tools to implement initiatives –Monitoring of practice to identify barriers –Activities promoting an inclusive corporate culture –Involvement of service-users in planning, monitoring & evaluation Finding people behind the jargon…..
