3 HISTORY OF SOCIAL HOUSING IN MARYSTOWN, NL  1966-1967 – construction of 200 housing units comprising of row housing, duplexes and individual homes  Early 1980s - divestiture of some of these units started, specifically duplexes and individual homes  Currently – NL Housing Corporation owns 147 units, mostly row housing on Atlantic Crescent and Smallwood Crescent  Currently – 26 of those units are vacant and in need of extensive repair

6 SOCIAL HOUSING IN MARYSTOWN, NL  The Kinsmen Manor opened in 1989 and can accommodate 27 residents. The Kinsmen Manor has operated at full capacity since it opened.

7 SOCIAL HOUSING IN MARYSTOWN, NL  Investment in affordable housing  in the last five years, developers have constructed 31 units under the IAH Program

8 BRENTWOOD VILLAGE / KINSMEN MANOR

9 SOCIAL HOUSING IN MARYSTOWN, NL  Marystown Retirement Centre  The Marystown Retirement Centre opened in 2005 and can accommodate 93 residents.  The Centre opened with support from the Town through a donation of land and remission of taxes for five years.

10 SOCIAL HOUSING IN MARYSTOWN, NL  Grace Sparkes House  Opened in 2000 and operates as a 10-bed emergency shelter for women and children.

11 SOCIAL HOUSING IN MARYSTOWN, NL  McAuley Place  Opened in 2014 and operates as a 6-unit independent apartment complex.  Has a housing support team consisting of various community resources including Grace Sparkes House, Mental Health and Addictions and the local Housing Support Worker.

12 SOCIAL HOUSING IN MARYSTOWN, NL  Blue Sky Family Services  Operate two independent homes in residential areas in Marystown  The definition of ‘Family’ is changing

13 CURRENT MUNICIPAL SUPPORT FOR SOCIAL HOUSING  Current Supports:  Supporting the FCM’s mandate for affordable housing  Ensuring that our municipal plan can accommodate non- traditional housing  Remission of taxes  In-kind contributions / monetary donations  Public awareness

14 FUTURE MUNICIPAL SUPPORTS FOR SOCIAL HOUSING  Future Supports:  Working with developers to build a greater inventory of social housing  Sponsoring Habitat for Humanity projects  Lobbying the provincial government for more funding to support social housing initiatives  Provide land for social housing developments
