Discover, Adopt, Integrate, and Deliver Digital Content CSU Affordable Learning $olutions Sept. 19, 2012 Mike Hagerty Director, Digital Education Partnerships
32
Getting ahead of a growing LMS trend In 2010, 59 percent of classes were using LMS, up from 17 percent in 2000. According to Book Industry Study Group (BISG)'s study of Student Attitudes Toward Content in Higher Education
33
Investing in the Future of eLearning Students’ definition of “value” is rapidly evolving. In the next three years: – Digital textbook availability will increase by 50 percent – The digital textbook market share will increase by at least 20 percent
34
Evolution of Delivering Content IN THE BEGINNING – Content distribution was primarily done through the campus bookstore IN THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS – A growing number of students have not acquired the materials needed for their courses due to the cost of education, creating a need for more affordable course materials JUST THIS YEAR – This process is evolving based on changes in consumption and the many devices students can use to access their text. It has aptly been named BYOD – Bring Your Own Device TOMORROW – Faculty need more information and better tools to make course content choices for their students TODAY – Educational programs are experimenting with digital products, having content conveniently delivered through LMS and reducing costs to students
35
Our Vision: Discover, Adopt, Integrate and Deliver Digital Content Adopt course materials quickly and easily with FacultyEnlight. Discover new course content through FacultyEnlight, accessed from Barnes & Noble College bookstore sites, or through the LMS. Deliver digital course materials through our new LMS building block (coming soon). Ideal for course fee models, or through our existing NOOK Study platform. Integrate NOOK Study and FacultyEnlight into the LMS course environment. DiscoverAdopt Integrate Deliver

37
Discover & Adopt Barnes & Noble College offers new tools for discovering and adopting course content. Discover – FacultyEnlight is a publisher-agnostic site (coming soon) designed to help faculty find the right materials for their course. – The site offers new tools to research content and share feedback with peers. Adopt – Focusing on what faculty want and need – Streamlining the online adoption process – Integrating with the LMS
38
New tools to help faculty choose course content We listened to faculty:We developed solutions: “I spend hours trying to figure out what books other schools are using.” FacultyEnlight will offer features that help faculty discover books other schools have adopted. “The social aspect of your site is appealing. I teach at a small school and there is no one else to talk to about this topic in my school.” Phase two of our site will offer social networking features that allow faculty to have conversations about content “It would be very useful to be able to go online and find out from another faculty member who uses the book, or from a book editor – how the book handles a particular concept.” Our site will offer a faculty-centered space to write and share reviews of books and materials. “Being introduced to tools like Mendelay – that would be cool, anything that is doing something for me would be interesting.” FacultyEnlight’s Discovery Center will showcase digital resources that are of interest to faculty.
39
Redesigning online adoption for faculty needs We listened to faculty:We developed solutions: “It’s not that the online ordering process is difficult, but it is certainly far from efficient.” Streamlined and simplified the adoption process, making it more efficient and intuitive “The registration process seems daunting. I have to wait for someone to approve it and send back a password.” Developed a new system that would allow faculty to create their own password – no waiting required “I get very annoyed when we don’t know what the end cost will be.” FacultyEnlight provides estimated student prices in the search results and product details pages including estimated pricing for available format options -- print, rental, and digital. “The database containing titles for the current adoption entry is not expansive enough. Will the new adoption entry system contain the bn.com database of titles?” We have integrated Barnes & Noble with Barnes & Noble College so that the millions of titles we support are available to you.
40
Integrate Faculty and students want everything in one place, so we provide fully integrated solutions. NOOK Study – Embed links to NOOK Study in your LMS course. – Set up a textbook list in your LMS with one-click access to the campus bookstore. – Provide access to open educational resources (OER) that are correlated to the textbook. FacultyEnlight – Upcoming versions of our building block will allow you to adopt textbooks and materials from your LMS.
