3 Knowledge is communicated from teacher to student. Student passively receives information. Emphasis is on acquisition of knowledge outside the context in which it will be used. Teacher’s role is to be the main source of information. Assessments are the primary determination of learning. Students are the only individuals learning. (Freed and Huba, 2000)

5 Students are engaged in their learning. Emphasizes the understanding of one’s world rather than to repeat “learned” facts. Students construct knowledge through gathering and synthesizing information and integrating it with the general skills of inquiry, communication, critical thinking, and problem solving. The teacher is the facilitator. Desired learning is assessed directly through papers, projects, performances, and portfolios. Culture is cooperative, collaborative, and supportive. (Freed and Huba, 2000; Lowther and Morrison, 2010)
