To open Word, click on the W in the dock.

Next, the Project Gallery will open up. We are looking for a word document.

There is the Word Document. Click

That will open up a New Document. It will say Document 1 at the top of the new document.

You may now begin typing your document! This white area is the place for typing your document. Later, we will learn how to improve your document by changing the font.

If you are already in WORD, you will see the word WORD next to the blue apple in the menu bar.

This bar that you see at the top that starts with the blue apple is called the menu bar. The menu bar is always found at the top of the screen.

Each section of the menu bar has a pull-down menu.

When we click once on the word File, a list of choices is shown in the pull-down menu.

Here is the pull-down menu under File. We will select New Blank Document.

That will open up a New Document. It will say Document 1 at the top of the new document.

Hot tip! Hot tip! Use a Shortcut! A shortcut is a command given to the computer using only the keyboard. Shortcuts are listed on the right in the pull-down menu. To open a New Blank Document using only the keyboard: Press Apple and the letter N.

It says Document 1 at the top of the new document. You’re now ready to start writing your first document!

In the document you will see a blinking line called the cursor. To type in different areas of the screen, you need to move the cursor. You can move the cursor with the arrow keys, or with the mouse.

In future lessons we will learn about the importance of having the cursor in an exact place in a document.

After you practice opening and typing in Word, we are going to use a keyboard shortcut to quit the program. When time is up we will all press the Apple key and the Q key. That will close Word and we will NOT be saving our document today.
