National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects National Accessible Reading Assessment Project General Advisory Committee October 17 2005 Meeting Review of Year 1 and Next Steps Cara Cahalan-Laitusis

National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects Review Goals of the project Update on progress towards Goal 1 and 2 Communication Plan Next Steps for Goals 1, 2, and 3

National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects Goals for Project 1.Develop a definition of reading proficiency 2.Research the assessment of reading proficiency 3.Develop research-based principles and guidelines making large-scale reading assessments more accessible for students who have disabilities that affect reading 4.Develop and field trial a prototype reading assessment

National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects Goal 1 Formulate a definition of the construct of reading proficiency that can be used as a basis for research and development for accessible large-scale tests of reading proficiency that provide (a) a valid measure against academic standards, and (b) individual interpretive, descriptive, and diagnostic reports for the full range of students with disabilities that affect reading.

National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects Tasks for Goal 1 Convened Definition Panel Created 3 Draft Definitions Conducted Focus Groups Finalized Definition Drafted Position Paper Second Meeting of Definition Panel Drafted Principles and Issues Paper

National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects Goal 2 Conduct a program of research on the assessment of reading proficiency (as defined under Goal One) to determine the effects of various factors of test development, design, and administration (item development, field test methods, presentation modes, formats, schedules, etc.) on accessibility, validity, and comparability for students with disabilities that affect reading.

National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects The program of research must be designed to produce an empirical base for developing accessible reading assessments that can provide –a valid measure of proficiency against academic standards, and –individual interpretive, descriptive, and diagnostic reports for students with disabilities that affect reading.

National Accessible Reading Assessment Projects Tasks for Goal 2 Set of papers synthesizing disability issue papers (PARA) Studies underway to examine psychometric properties of state assessments for students with disabilities (PARA and DARA) Data collection underway for large experimentally designed differential boost study (DARA)
