2 Objectives: To understand the various types of relationships we have in our lives. To understand the components of a healthy relationship. To determine what is important to you in a relationship.

3 Relationship= Bond or connection between two people
The connection satisfies basic emotional needs Basic emotional needs= to love, to be loved, comfort, security, disclosure, trust Healthy relationship= both parties feel the same way and want a relationship Role= part one plays in a relationship, roles may change

4 MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF NEEDS
Abraham Maslow was born in Maslow was interested in mental health and human potential. In 1943, Maslow introduced his hierarchy of needs. Maslow‘s hierarchy of needs is an attempt to classify human needs in order of importance. With his hierarchy of needs, Maslow focused more on positive mental health than most that studied before him. Maslow's theories, including the hierarchy of needs have had a great and lasting impact on the humanistic approach to psychology and are still used in many facets of life today.

6 Level 3 - Love and belonging needs - Sometimes referred to as social needs. Interaction with others and acceptance by others. This is the first level of higher level needs and centers around emotionally based relationships. Includes friendship, love, belonging to a group, intimacy, and family life. If these needs are not satisfied people may become susceptible to loneliness and depression. One can satisfy love and belonging needs through involvement in social, community, or religious groups.

8 - The first relationship you ever have - Provides the strongest bonds
Family - The first relationship you ever have - Provides the strongest bonds - With family, you get what you get. In other words, you have no choice.

9 What kind of role does family play in your life?
In your notes, answer this question. Describe the dynamics of your family. Who plays which role? What are your thoughts and feelings about family? More specifically, your family?

10 Close friends vs. Casual friends- do you know the difference?
Friendship A significant relationship between two people based on caring, respect, consideration, and communication Close friends vs. Casual friends- do you know the difference? Platonic friendship: relationship with member of opposite gender which there is affection but no sexual activity

11 Think about the following questions:
How did these people become your friends? What do you have in common? Why are you friends with these people? Are you closer to some people than others?

12 Community Examples include teachers, neighbors, business, citizen, organizations, clubs, leaders, volunteer What kinds of relationships do you have with these people?

13 LOVING A profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person that usually entails sexual passion or desire. Does not typically happen until teenage years or later. There is a significant difference between young love, mature love, and lust.

14 Anyone want to share their thoughts on love?
Is there a difference between being in love and loving someone? Is it possible to deeply love someone at your age? Have you ever told someone you loved them? Watch this clip from Seinfeld to see how it went for George:

15 What qualities make up a healthy relationship?

16 A Healthy Relationship
Cooperation= working together for the good of all Compromise= result of each person giving something up to reach result that satisfies everyone Respect for each other’s opinion Acceptance, Honesty, Trustworthiness= knowing they would not do anything to hurt you Dependability, Loyalty= there when you need someone and can trust they will speak good about you even when you are not around Empathy= ability to share another person's feeling/thoughts

17 Time for an activity Girls on one side of the room; boys on the other.
One recorder per group. List the top ten things you want in a future partner. Ten is least important; one is most important. BE HONEST!!!

18 So, how are we ever supposed to partner with someone if what we want is so different?

19 Don’t forget: Communicating Effectively
Communication is a process through which you send messages and receive messages from others Speaking skills, listening skills are vital in a relationship, as well as non-verbal communication

20 Conclusion There are various types of relationships including friendship, love, family, and community. A healthy relationship involves many qualities including trust, positive communication, respect, etc. We all have different relationships and based upon what we value plays a strong role in what we want or expect in our relationships. Having relationships is something we need.
