Brave New World Chapters 11 - 12

Poor DHC!  He resigns in shame.  We also experience the irony of Linda’s name and of her desire to return to the World State.  Meaning of “Linda?”  How does Linda cope with reentry into the WS?  Jump to pg. 155 – paragraph that begins “In the end…”  What is Huxley doing with language here? Adverbial clauses.  For what effect?

Bernard finally finds himself treated as a man of importance… pgs. 156 - 157  What effect does this have on him?  What is his “soma?”  This reconciles him with the world which, until then, he had found unsatisfactory.  If we ever wondered if Bernard would lead the uprising, we now know this will not happen.  Jump to page 159 – 160.  What does Huxley do to get us to buy the Savage’s revulsion with the citizens of the World State?

Chapter 12  Function of chapter…  John has reached his breaking point  This mirrors Bernard being forcing him to visit the Reservation for humanity  John makes a final rejection of the W.S. as he reclaims his native language

John and Helmholtz are friends…  This friendship increases Bernard’s resentment and jealousy  It also brings out the worst of Bernard’s immaturity  Unfortunately, it is ultimately another example of a failed connection  R&J contains themes that are too human for Helmholtz  Meaningful relationships, marriage, and burial are too much for him to accept and understand  John’s last resort is exhausted.  MADNESS AND VIOLENCE  Helmholtz wants to find these things in the W.S.  Result = John has no world in which he feels comfortable

Huxley’s claim  One could view BNW as an argument, as all satire can be viewed. Jump to page 177.  What, in Huxley’s opinion, is happiness?
