WHAT IS ZERO WASTE? Keeping as much trash out of the landfill as possible. In Austin “as much as possible” = 90% of all waste by 2040 ◦ Supposed to be at 50% in 2015; currently at < 40% ◦ AISD likely less then 40% 4

SORTING RULES OF THUMB RECYCLING 10 PAPER & CARDBOARD If it’s clean, dry, and tears, recycle it. If it’s wet or has food on it, compost (if available) or landfill it. If it’s coated with plastic or foil, landfill it.

SORTING RULES OF THUMB RECYCLING 11 PLASTICS If it falls to the ground when dropped, recycle it. If it floats to the ground when dropped, landfill it.

BAGS Landfill = Black/grey signage/bin + black bag Compost = Green signage/bin + green bag ^ Recycle = Blue signage/bin + clear bag * ^ 32-gal compostable bags can be ordered through IFIS: Stock No. 800.
