This class is about ► GIS applications for environmental modeling
2
As the syllabus says ► You should learn …... ► Method design in the lectures ► Method implementation in the labs
3
So you have learned ► Method design Viewshed analysis t test and logistic regression ► Hands-on GIS skills ArcMap, ArcCatalog, etc. ► But the experience of managing a project counts, and counts more
4
What experience? ► Come up with a project on your own ► Design the method ► Collect data ► Implement the project ► Report it ► These experiences are most valuable
5
Learn how to learn ► ArcMap are one-time skills ► Know how to learn is a life-long benefit ► Those who know how to learn are always ahead
6
You Are … ► Willing and driven That is exactly what ESRI likes about the “Buffalo Mafia” and that is why the employers wanted to come back ► Curious to learn This is a critical quality the employers look for, including the academic employers ► Able to compete on the job market
7
So... You can walk on the water now
8
But... ► Before you do that, I would recommend that you save your visuals in a portfolio for job interviews and so on. They look great.
9
Beyond this class ► For those who head to the job market Programming GEO555, GEO655, and a workshop on Web GIS ► For those who want to wait a couple years Programming ► Of course the graduate students need more theoretical stuff
10
Way beyond this class ► Self starter ► Network of support group ► Long hours ► Good at computers ► Good physical and mental health
11
By the way, ► Your presentations are impressive ► I’d like to have 5-8 slides from each of you, on the same day you submit your final paper ► Submit your paper to a folder called ‘Final Paper’ in UBLearns ► Submit your slides to ‘PPT’ in UBLearns
12
What are in the 5 slides? ► Slide #1: project title, your name, geo559 or 479 ► Slide #2: objectives / method design ► Slides #3 -#6: impressive stuff e.g. data layers and intermediate and final results e.g. data layers and intermediate and final results ► Slide #8 has to be 3D!
