Aim: How can the metric system help us make uniform measurements? Do Now: The smart board needs a new cover. What can we use to measure the smart board with if we don’t have a tool?
2
Why do we measure? We cannot rely on observations made with only our senses. They aren’t accurate. Measurements help us gather information. Exact measurements are important to scientists.
3
What do we measure? Length Mass Volume

How do we measure? Customary Difficult to convert between measurements. What we use in the US. Examples include: inches, feet, quart, gallon, ounces, pounds. Metric Easy to convert between measurements. Used by scientists and most of the world. Examples include: meters, liters, and grams.

How do we measure? Scientists use the metric system to make measurements. This system is based on the idea that measurements can easily be converted because it is based on the number 10.
