6 GCSE Core Biology ASSESSOR TIPS A symbol represents 1 atom of an element. Thermal decomposition means ‘breaking down using heat’ you need to mention ‘breaking down’ and ‘using heat’ for full marks. To access grade B & above you must be able to write balanced chemical equations. You must be able to write equations for the reactions of quicklime with water & slaked lime with carbon dioxide. Make sure you know the differences between cement, mortar and concrete.

8 GCSE Core Biology ASSESSOR TIPS You do not need to remember the technical details of the blast furnace. Make sure you know the 3 main types of steel (low alloy, high alloy & carbon) & what they contain. When asked for properties of alloys, many students include cost or cheapness but this is not a property of the substance and will not be awarded any marks. You must know the similarities & differences between titanium & aluminium. Aluminium is a reactive metal near the top of the reactivity series, however, it is protected by a tough layer of oxide on its surface.
