Read pgs and answer the following questions in your notes:
List three causes of exploration
List three effects of exploration
What was the spice trade? How did it contribute to the start of exploration?
How did religion contribute to the start of exploration?
What did sailors need for exploration to succeed?
What did ancient navigators use to explore? How was this different than sailors of the exploration era?
List three problems sailors encountered while trying to explore new land.
How did the Hellenistic astronomer, Ptolemy, improve the accuracy of maps?
How did the construction of ships change? Why were they more effective?
What was a caravel? Why was it important at the time?

4. Intro to Exploration
Early navigators relied on landmarks, the stars, and the sun to determine their directions.
This made maps very inaccurate.
Maps were usually drawn from scattered impressions of travelers and traders, but mostly from rumors.
Most people believed the earth was flat!
During the Renaissance, technology increased
compasses, ships, latitude/longitude, etc.
These new advances led to the age of exploration!
Explorers set out to find new land, resources and develop trade.

During the Renaissance, there were five main explorers:
Bartholomeu Dias
Vasco de Gama
Christopher Columbus
Ferdinand Magellan
Hernando Cortes

11. Exploration
To learn more about the successes of exploration, you are going to complete an exploration mini-project.
You will work independently to read and research all information on exploration.
This covers the entire section of exploration, and we will use two days of in-class time, so make sure you work effectively!

To start class, get five different colors to represent the five main European explorers.
Create a key for each explorer in the open space south of Australia.
We will label the voyage routes of each explorer shortly……..
