Risk of Sexual Activity – Intro to STDs Risks of Teen Sexual Activity Possible consequences of teen sexual activity include: 7 th Grade loss of self-esteem unplanned pregnancy sexually transmitted diseases Emotional and social consequences Abstinence is the only sure way to eliminate the risks of teen sexual activity. Sexually transmitted diseases are infectious diseases that are spread by sexual contact

Risk of Sexual Activity – Intro to STDs Teen Pregnancy 1 in 10 female teenagers gets pregnant each year. 4 in 10 of all girls become pregnant before they reach age 20. Teen pregnancies are hard on the mother’s health. Babies born to teen mothers are more likely to have health problems. 7 th Grade

Most pregnant teens do not finish high school. Parents are legally responsible for their child’s well-being. On average, teen fathers make less money than male teens who are not fathers.

STDs: The Silent Epidemic Many STDs are asymptomatic, which means you can have the disease without any symptoms. When there are no symptoms, a person may spread the disease without knowing it. STDs Can Cause Permanent Damage Some STDs, such as herpes, cannot be cured. Some STDs can cause miscarriages or infant blindness. Being informed about STDs can help you avoid them. If you think you might have been exposed to an STD, see a doctor as soon as possible 7 th Grade

Risk of Sexual Activity – Intro to STDs Being Responsible About STDs If you think you might have an STD: 7 th Grade seek medical help right away. complete the full course of medications. have follow-up testing done. avoid all sexual activity while being treated. notify all sexual partners.

Teens at High Risk Teenagers are at higher risk of getting an STD because their bodies may not fight infections as well as the bodies of healthy adults can. Females are at higher risk of catching an STD because females have large areas of mucous membranes that can be exposed to infectious particles during sexual intercourse. During sexual intercourse, females receive a larger volume of potentially infected body fluid than males do. Teenage females are especially at risk because the cells on the cervix of teenage females are more susceptible to infection than the cells of the adult cervix. Peer Pressure Now onto Peer Pressure Make a list of the groups, things, or people that can influence your behavior. 7 th Grade

Who Influences You? Positive influences can encourage you to improve yourself or to do good. Negative influences can pressure you to do something that is unhealthy or dangerous. Peer pressure is a feeling that you should do something because that is what your friends want. 7 th Grade Peer Pressure

Types of Pressure Direct pressure is the result of someone trying to convince you to do something you normally wouldn’t do. Indirect pressure results from being swayed to do something because people you look up to are doing it. 7 th Grade Peer Pressure
