2 Define: O Is a neurological syndrome generally characterized by impulsivity, distractibility, and hyperactivity that is inconsistent with the age of the person O Often students with ADHD have symptoms that are inappropriately diagnosed as other disabilities.

3 Characteristics students with ADHD are different from their peers because they can’t concentrate or control their impulses I. Does not pay attention to details II. Difficulty listening to what is being said III. Struggles through and completing assignments at home and school IV. Problems with organizing tasks V. Avoids tasks that require challenging activities

4 Identification Process I. Administering and collecting rating scales from relevant persons II. Orienting the family and the student to the evaluation III. Interviewing the student IV. Administering normed test such as IQ, achievement, and continuous performance tests V. Conducting direct observations in several settings, including school, community, and home if possible VI. Interviewing the parent(s) and other family members VII. Conducting a medical evaluation VIII. Integrating all the data IX. Giving feedback and recommendations to the team

O Use email with students to enforce and encourage both reading and writing skills. O Provide audio tapes of classic literature for listening while engaged in other task

O Make sure you know who made the diagnosis and what treatment was prescribed O Allow students to have a schedule for medication O Create a supportive and organized atmosphere O Ensure that materials are of an appropriate level O Use praise that is specific O Encourage students to monitor their own behavior O Converse with family frequently O Make academic goal clear to the student

7 Underachievement O Some may have a depressed IQ score O May have a condition of learned helplessness

8 Transition Services O Is required for every student with a disability who is served under IDEA O Helps students get into school, work, other placements after age 21 or graduation from high school

9 Professionals Educational Personnel O Special Education teachers assist in O Teaching and helping students to organize materials O Take required items to class O Write homework assignments correctly O Understand the assignments
