Some New Data From FRC Experiment on Relaxation For discussions at Hall-Dynamo and Related Physics meeting CMSO June 10-11, 2004 at PPPL Guo et al, PRL 92, 245001 (2004)
2
Outline Introduction –FRC –TCS experiment Experimental results –Flux conversion and magnetic helicity –Flow and kinetic helicity Summary
3
Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) Compact toroidal plasma with small toroidal field High-beta (~1), maximum beta confined by magnetic field Globally (and locally) unstable to MHD mode, but can be stabilized by physics beyond MHD (Hall, ion kinetic effect, etc.)
4
FRC Formed by Theta-Pinch Method Fast-pinch experiment using high-voltage and shock-heating: extremely violent process Can be formed and translated to another place Hoffman et al., U Washington
5
FRC Formation and Translation Plasma settles to a relatively stable state: relaxation?
6
Reduction of Toroidal Field Measured by internal probe array Initial toroidal field is reduced when relaxed
7
Flux Conversion and Magnetic Helicity Conservation?
8
Flow and Ion Kinetic Helicity Significant toroidal flow (>20% of V A ?)
9
Summary Tendency to settle at a relatively quite or relaxed state Flux conversion (toroidal to poloidal) while conserving magnetic helicity Significant flow exists with a finite kinetic helicity?
