United Way Message Overall Summary Statement Investing in the community through United Way is the most effective way to have the greatest impact for those in need.
5
The Need is Great & Growing Almost 680,000 people (many of them children) live at or below 200% of the national poverty level – and this is a 10% increase from last year. More than ever – they need our help right now!
6
United Way Focus To help them, United Way invests in the building blocks for a good life in three key areas – basic needs, health and education.
7
Providing the Safety Net For someone in need, United Way focuses on stabilizing them in the short-term. Making sure families have enough food to eat, making sure they have shelter and a good place to life, making sure they are safe from family violence and have access to health care should they need it.
8
Pathways out of Poverty And United Way is focused on building those pathways OUT of poverty for those in need. For children, that pathway is Education – making sure they are ready to learn by kindergarten and can read at level by 3 rd grade (because before 3 rd grade you learn to read and after 3 rd grade you are reading to learn).
9
Pathways out of Poverty And for adults, that pathway is Jobs Training. Making sure someone has a post-high school certification, training or a degree, so that he/she can earn a good wage and support the family today and in the future.
10
