Steve Prefontaine A Running Leader By: Chris Nish

Background He was born on January 25 th 1951. He started running at Marshfield High School. He then attended the University of Oregon. He appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated at age 19. Pre was in a fraternity in college.

Strengths and Weaknesses This quote on the left shows one of Pre’s strengths. The ability to inspire. One of his weaknesses was that he pushed the limits all the time, with almost everything.

Leadership Style His leadership style was not actually a leadership in the style that we have discussed in class. He lead by example. He worked hard at what he did, people saw that and were inspired. He had people following him, that is why I consider him a leader.

Sad Ending Pre unfortunately passed away in a tragic car accident on Friday May 30 th, 1975. He had been drinking and was not wearing his seat belt. His BAC was.16%. This sad turn of events saddened the running community and had an effect for years to come.
