Launched in 2001 with eight agencies participating, the NNI today consists of the individual and cooperative nanotechnology- related activities of 20 Federal departments and independent agencies with a range of research and regulatory roles and responsibilities

Key Components of NNI

Funding of NNI The President’s 2015 Budget provides over $1.5 billion for the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), a continued investment in support of the President’s priorities and innovation strategy. Cumulatively totaling nearly $21 billion since the inception of the NNI in 2001

Nanoscale Science Research Centers: A New Research Paradigm Interdisciplinary nanoscience research requires: Multiple tools very complex prohibitively expensive Collaboration among experts in different areas A new research paradigm is needed, with Shared facilities Expert staff (in-house research program) US DOE’s Nanoscale Research Centers: State-of-the-art tools and scientific expertise Open, free User access based on peer-reviewed proposals Externally evaluated triennially on scientific productivity and User satisfaction “We can do things that are nearly impossible in a normal university setting. (For instance,) developing a radically new process has been so successful at the CFN because of the consistency in the fabrication tools, the wide range of characterization tools, and expert knowledge.” CFN User Prof. Dirk Englund (MIT)

Center for Functional Nanomaterials at BNL Nanomaterials in operando: Identify, understand and control energy transformations in catalysts and batteries under working conditions Nano-architectures for energy solutions: Use block copolymer self assembly to design macroscopic physical properties Self-assembled nanomaterials by design: Use DNA to direct self-assembly of nanoscale objects into systems with unique functions Model catalyst Real catalyst 1 um1 cm100 nm
